Google remembers its strengths Pixel 3

Google’s machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities set Pixel 3 apart from the competition. But sometimes the software reaches its limits.

The nickname Google Mobile deserves the new Pixel 3 like no other phone before. In times when most smartphones look confusingly like each other and components from the supplier’s shelf are adjusting the technical performance, Google is focusing on its strengths.

The Internet company wants to prove that its capabilities in machine learning and artificial intelligence make the difference. The results are often impressive – but sometimes also show the current limitations of Google software.

One remark in advance: Except for the size of the OLED screens, the two models do not differ in the functions. The larger Pixel 3 XL has a 6.3-inch display with a noticeably large opening at the top edge of the display (Notch).

The smaller model Pixel 3 comes without Notch, but has relatively wide edges at the top and bottom of his 5.5-inch display. The screen in the standard model has a resolution of 2160 by 1080 pixels, the XL version even comes to 2960 by 1440 pixels – significantly more than the previous models. With the displays one could not recognize in the test also the blue cast, which annoyed some owners of the Pixel 2 XL.

Test Google mobile Pixel 3

Google advertises its new generation of smartphones, but mainly as a top camera. Here, the group has already raised the bar with the Pixel 2, which earned a lot of praise from experts. Now Google wants to demonstrate that its algorithms can do what other vendors need more complex cameras with multiple lenses.

Apple’s iPhone XS has two lenses, the P20 from Huawei three, Samsung’s brand new Galaxy A9 even four. Google, however, remains at Pixel 3 with only one lens for the main camera on the back – with a 12.2-megapixel sensor as in Pixel 2.

Instead of generating additional information from the optics, algorithms should recognize the content of the image and the lighting conditions. The new features include, for example, “Top Photo”: The Pixel 3 automatically notices when someone in the picture just closed their eyes or has a little flattering facial expression.

However, the phone takes a few pictures before and after for safety and suggests the best motive by itself. In the “photo box” mode of the selfie camera you do not even need to press the shutter button: the pixel takes a picture as soon as the user smiles – or does the infamous “Duckface”.

Even the portrait mode with a blurred background (bokeh effect) generates the Pixel 3 alone with software. This works pretty well in most cases. In more exotic portrait subjects such as a goose, however, the algorithm had difficulty distinguishing between animal and background.

On the other hand, the camera can shine in HDR + mode with its extended contrast range. Even with images that have bright light and shadow areas at the same time or were photographed against the sun, details that are often lost in the dark are easily recognizable. The Pixel 3 takes several shots with different exposure and puts them together optimally.

Bonds from the software processing of satellite imagery at the Pixel 3 ensure that even without a real optical telephoto zoomed images do not appear out of focus. Again, several shots are generated, which are then virtually merged into a new “SuperRes” photo. A Google announced night vision function could not be tested in the test yet. It should comply with the software update – by the way, also for 2-pixel.

In contrast to the main camera Google donated the front camera Pixel 3 two lenses. This fits in Gruppenenselfie even without a stick more people on the picture. And here too, a software function is used: It eliminates the distortions that otherwise appear with wide-angle lenses. A digital video stabilization compensates by software wobbling movements of the hand.

The combination of artificial intelligence and photography is also used in the Google Lens function, which allows you to scan and process business cards, web addresses or telephone numbers with just a tap. Lens can also identify plants or animals or search for similar products on the Web.

The Pixel 3 can also be charged wirelessly as the first Google smartphone. If you place the Pixel Stand accessory in the shopping basket in addition to the Pixel 3 for 79 euros, you will not only get a station for cordless charging, but you can also turn the smartphone into a digital picture frame or a smart daylight alarm clock, the owner 15 minutes before the set time with a simulated sunrise gently leads into the day.

Like the Pixel 2, the new phone can automatically detect music that is playing in the environment. Deeply integrated into the device is also the Google Assistant – the Internet company’s answer to Apple’s Siri and Alexa from Amazon . Its latest feature – the talking software Duplex, which can book by itself a hair appointment or reserve a table in the restaurant – remains initially only US users of the Pixel 3 reserved.

The Pixel 3 comes in three colors, which Google calls “Just Black,” “Clearly White,” and ironically “Not Pink,” a kind of earlobe pink. The Google Pixel 3 and the larger 3 XL cost 849 and 949 Euro (64 GB), with 128 GB it is 949 and 1049 Euro.

Security and feature updates should get Pixel-3 users until at least October 2021. A tip for money savers: The predecessor Pixel 2 is now traded for less than 600 euros.
